It is 110˚F outside my house in Southern Oregon right now. It has never been this hot here. Still few believe that climate change is caused by deforestation. Fossil fuel emissions are not the main cause of climate change. This is dedicated to my daughter Bridget, who walked out of her high school class today to protest government inaction on climate change.
For decades the U.S. Forest Service and BLM has been seeking out and cutting large dead trees in Federal forests to prevent areas from being listed as critical habitat for endangered species. This may be an intentional civil and criminal violation of the Endangered Species Act. [Photos]
Most of our forest landscape has become one giant densely-packed single-age tinderbox. Who’s at fault for the precarious situation? The timber industry is at fault; the government is at fault; and ultimately, we are all at fault.
Once society widely understands what needs can never be met with democracy + capitalism, humanity will start seeking a better way forward. What are the two great problems that modern society cannot solve?
Almost everyone accepts forest clear-cutting as a given, while the economic damage from smoke alone exceeds the forestry income and it is a root cause of climate change. Let’s see how it is all connected.
